According to what was reported by the Chinese media, ByteDance would have pulled the plug of the mobile division as early as January 13: the company that owns TikTok would have already absorbed the Smartisan research and development team in its hardware team. Precisely this is the team dedicated to educational hardware ("Education" sector), led by the founder of Musical-ly Yang Luyu. According to what was reconstructed by the Asian newspaper ITHome, Smartisan sales would not have been satisfactory; the same brand would not have met the hoped-for success. Furthermore, it seems that there are also problems of a logistic nature: ByteDance would not have the productive power of Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo on its side, with much higher production costs than these realities.
ByteDance closes Smartisan Product Manager Zhu Haizhou also intervened in all this, through a post on Weibo and comments, who specified some details. Obviously the after-sales services, assistance and software maintenance of the system will continue and the current owners of a Smartisan-branded smartphone can sleep peacefully.
