Under the "Not a Bot" subscription, new users must pay a nominal fee of just $1 USD per year to access their tweeting privileges. X's objective is to combat persistent issues like spam, manipulation, and bot activity while striking a balance between platform accessibility and integrity.
Not Just Pay-to-Play
To use "Not a Bot," new users need to verify their phone numbers, which grants access to essential features like tweeting, retweeting, bookmarking, and liking posts. Those who opt not to pay will find themselves in "read-only" mode, restricted to consuming content without active participation.
It's important to note that existing users are exempt from this fee. X has stated that the primary aim is to enhance the platform's quality rather than generate profit.
X's move was partially inspired by Elon Musk, who suggested a mandatory payment to combat bots and spam. Musk's idea created significant activity on X's rival platform, Bluesky, highlighting the importance of this issue.
Starting today, we're testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post & interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected.
