Technical Challenges on Twitter
Following Musk's announcement, users encountered error messages preventing them from accessing tweets. This issue persisted, causing widespread frustration and leading to trending hashtags such as #TwitterDown and #RIPTwitter. Downdetector, a platform tracking internet disruptions, recorded a significant number of complaints regarding Twitter's accessibility problems.
The Connection to Unpaid Google Cloud Bills
Speculation has arisen regarding a potential correlation between Twitter's tweet limitations and its refusal to pay Google Cloud bills. According to reports by Zoe Schiffer and Casey Newton on Platformer, Twitter has relied on external providers, including Google and Amazon, to supplement its infrastructure. Prior to Musk's acquisition of Twitter, the platform had an ongoing contract with Google for various services, such as spam prevention, removal of child sexual abuse material, and account security. The renewal date for this contract was set for June 30, raising questions about the influence of the payment dispute on Musk's decision to restrict tweet access.
Musk's Impact on Twitter
Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in October of the previous year, for a staggering $44 billion, triggered both excitement and skepticism. Since assuming the role of CEO, Musk has faced criticism for the rise in offensive content on the platform and a decline in advertising revenue. As a response, he introduced Twitter Blue, a subscription service that offers verification through a blue checkmark. However, the move to monetize verification has led to a diminished perception of its significance, as the symbol was originally intended to authenticate influential individuals.
