India has announced that it will require all smartphone manufacturers to adopt the USB-C standard for all devices by 2025. This decision follows a similar requirement by the European Union, which also mandates the use of USB-C for all smartphones and portable devices in the region by 2025 in an effort to reduce electronic waste.
India is planning to adopt the USB-C standard for not only smartphones, but also wearable devices by 2025. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established quality benchmarks for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to follow for their products. The deadline for this change has been set after consultations with industry stakeholders and will be implemented gradually to make it easier for people to adapt.
The Ministry of Environment Forrest and Climate Change will also evaluate the impact of this change and its ability to address the issue of electronic waste. This change is expected to save money for consumers by allowing them to use a single charger that is compatible with most products. It is not yet clear if and when the USB-C standard will be adopted for other devices such as tablets and laptops. While most Android OEMs are likely to easily adopt this change, as many smartphones already use USB-C, it remains to be seen how quickly Apple will make the transition. Apple has confirmed that it will comply with the new law and it is possible that the next generation of iPhones will feature USB-C ports.
