One of the main factors that boosted HarmonyOS’s popularity was the release of the Huawei Mate 60 series in 2023. These flagship phones featured a new custom chipset with 5G capabilities, which impressed both critics and consumers. The Mate 60 series also received strong support from the Chinese public, who saw Huawei as a symbol of national pride and innovation.
HarmonyOS has an advantage over Android in China, because it does not rely on Google’s services, which are blocked in the country. Instead, HarmonyOS offers its own ecosystem of apps and services, which cater to the local needs and preferences of the Chinese users. HarmonyOS also promises to deliver a smooth and secure performance across different devices, such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and smart TVs.
However, HarmonyOS still faces some challenges in the global market, where Android and iOS have a loyal fan base and a wide range of apps and services. HarmonyOS will have to prove that it can compete with the established players, and offer something unique and valuable to the international users. It remains to be seen whether HarmonyOS can become a global phenomenon, or remain a niche player in China.
